Video Analysis

Most surfers have never seen themselves surf. What you feel you are doing on a wave and what the camera shows are rarely the same thing, and it is hard to fix a habit you have never watched.

  • Frame-by-frame breakdown
  • Technique analysis
  • Personal feedback session
  • Exercises to work on

I watch you surf before I say anything. Then we work on the habits that are costing you waves, one at a time, until you are catching better ones.

“Dan is the best! I have had my first lessons with Daniel three years ago and had to do a few more sessions with him when I got back to Jbay. Genuinely the best surf instructor in town for both beginners and more intermediate surfers.”

Good to Know

Surf Lesson Questions

The things people ask Daniel on WhatsApp before they book.

How much does a surf lesson cost?

Prices depend on whether you book a private session, a small group session or a multi-day package, and on how many days you are in Jeffreys Bay. Message Daniel on WhatsApp with your dates and your level and he will come back with a plan and a price.

What level of surfer does Daniel coach?

Daniel coaches intermediate and advanced surfers: people who can already catch and ride a wave and want to get better. Intermediates are where he does his best work, the surfers who can stand up but have stopped improving.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes, sessions are for surfers aged 18 and over.

How long is a session?

About two hours. That is roughly 25 to 30 minutes of coaching and technique, and around an hour and a half in the water.

Are a board and wetsuit included?

Yes, a board and wetsuit are included in your session, so you can travel light. If you would rather ride your own equipment, bring it and Daniel will coach you on that.

Is Daniel first aid trained?

Yes, Daniel holds a Level 3 First Aid qualification.

How experienced is Daniel as a coach?

Daniel has been coaching for 16 years and has surfed the waves of Jeffreys Bay for more than 28, so he has seen the mistake you are making many times before.

What languages does Daniel coach in?

Daniel coaches in English and Afrikaans, and understands Dutch.

Where do we meet for lessons?

Lessons take place in Jeffreys Bay. Because the best spot changes with the swell, wind and tide, Daniel confirms exactly where to meet on WhatsApp the evening before your session.

What happens if the conditions are bad?

Daniel checks the forecast daily and moves the time or the spot to catch the best window. If the ocean will not play at all, he reschedules you for a better one.

When is the best time to visit, and how far ahead should I book?

Jeffreys Bay works all year. It is busiest in winter, June and July, and in summer, December and January. Most people book about a week ahead, though sometimes a day is enough, so message Daniel with your dates and he will let you know what is open.

Can I book multiple days?

Yes, Daniel offers 3, 5, 7 and 10-day progression packages for surfers staying longer in Jeffreys Bay. You can also put together a custom trip using the Build Your Own Surf Trip tool.

What should I bring?

Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and water. A board and wetsuit are provided, and Daniel sends a full checklist once you book.

Surfboard Advice

Riding the wrong board holds more surfers back than technique does. Get honest advice on what you should be under.
